BRIGID BAPTISTE WAS STILL sitting on the floor before the desk, cross-legged, facing the rug hanging from the pitons that Grant had hammered into the ceiling. In the unforgiving illumination of the xenon flashlight, two things were made starkly clear: her eyes were closed and there was a glistening line of blood trickling from her left nostril. “Come on, Baptiste,” Kane said, kneeling before the redheaded woman, his voice rising. “Don’t get yourself stuck in some stupid head game now.” Kane reached forward, his hands grabbing Brigid’s shoulders, ready to shake her awake, but Grant stopped him. “Remember what Lakesh said,” he admonished. “We’re not to disturb her, right? This is way out of our field of expertise, Kane. I think we had better report this and make our next move under advisement.” Kane looked up at his friend, his face full of anguish, and finally he nodded. “She had better be okay,” he stated. As Kane knelt there, looking at the trickle of blood coming from Brigid’s nose, a purple-black bruise erupted over her left eye, forming from nowhere. Grant pointed to the ceiling, but Kane wasn’t looking at him. “I’ll go upstairs and file the report while you stay here and watch her,” he said. He walked backward to the door, his eyes never leaving the two people on the floor, before turning and exiting the room. After a moment, Grant’s face reappeared in the doorway. “And Kane?” he said. “Until we hear different, you take a hands-off approach to this, no matter what you see, right?” Kane nodded, not bothering to look back. “Get going, I’ll hold the fort.” He and Brigid were anam-charas, soul friends for eternity. Watching her being tortured like this, her body being marked as if from within, hurt Kane, as well. But it hurt most that, for now at least, there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.
